Jay Harrington focuses his coaching practice on helping lawyers to develop the skills, mindsets, productivity habits, and business practices necessary to build meaningful books of business. He works with individual lawyers and groups of lawyers on a number of issues, including personal brand development, building niche practice/industry specialties, growing networks, and positioning oneself as a thought leader. His practical, proactive, and interactive executive coaching style helps lawyers make thoughtful and intentional decisions about their business development activities. Jay also speaks at law firm retreats, workshops, and other education-oriented settings on a number of marketing and business development-related topics. He primarily coaches and trains associates and junior partners at mid-size to large law firms.

Jay frequently speaks and writes on important issues and trends in legal marketing. His writing is featured in monthly columns for Law.com, JD Supra, Attorney at Work, and Legal Ink Magazine. Jay’s new book, The Essential Associate: Step Up, Stand Out, and Rise to the Top as a Young Lawyer, was published in April of 2018 and is an Amazon bestseller. Jay is also the author of One of a Kind: A Proven Path to a Profitable Law Practice, which focuses on how lawyers can build books of business through creative differentiation.

Previously, Jay practiced law as a commercial litigator and corporate bankruptcy attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and Foley & Lardner. He also co-founded and ran a successful corporate restructuring firm in Detroit. He has an undergraduate degree in journalism and earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.
